About this treatment

Target the bacteria involved in inflammatory acne.

BLU-U delivers controlled blue light to skin with inflammatory acne. The light targets acne-related bacteria without an invasive procedure, and it may be used on its own or with a light-sensitive solution when a clinician recommends a more intensive approach.

BLU-U uses a controlled wavelength of blue light to target bacteria involved in inflammatory acne. It is non-invasive and does not use needles or remove the surface of the skin.

For persistent acne, the light may be combined with Levulan, a topical light-sensitive solution that is absorbed by targeted cells, pores and oil glands. This combination requires additional screening and aftercare.

Blue light and PDT are different treatment plans.

BLU-U blue light can be used as a non-invasive acne treatment without removing the skin's surface. When a photosensitizing solution is added, the treatment becomes photodynamic therapy and requires different preparation and light precautions.

The clinic reviews sensitivity to light, medications and active skincare before treatment. Protective eyewear is used while the light is directed at the skin, and the intensity of aftercare depends on whether blue light is used alone or with a topical solution.

Know which kind of light treatment is proposed.

BLU-U blue light and photodynamic therapy are not simply two names for the same appointment. Light treatment alone differs from a plan that includes a photosensitizing medicine. Ask which approach is being discussed and what that means for preparation and aftercare.

For acne, visible-light treatments do not address every type of blemish equally. Tell us whether your main concern is inflamed pimples, blocked pores or deeper lesions. That distinction helps frame a useful discussion about the role of light in a broader care plan.

Common questions

What does BLU-U target?

BLU-U blue light is used to target bacteria involved in acne and may help selected inflammatory breakouts. It is not a treatment for every acne type or every cause of a spot. Ask how your particular acne has been assessed and whether light therapy would be used alone or alongside skincare or medical treatment already in place.

What does a session feel like?

You recline while light is directed at the selected area, with protective eyewear in place. The clinic describes light-only treatment as non-invasive and generally comfortable. Ask whether your appointment involves blue light alone or an added light-sensitive medication, since that distinction changes what you may feel and the recovery instructions you need to follow afterward.

Why might Levulan be added?

A clinician may recommend a light-sensitive topical medication as part of photodynamic therapy, making the treated tissue more responsive to light. This is a different treatment decision from blue light alone and brings additional precautions. Ask why it is being proposed for your concern, what product would be used and how you would prepare for the light-avoidance period afterward.

What should I disclose before treatment?

Discuss medicines and skincare, including retinoids, antibiotics and anything associated with light sensitivity, as well as pregnancy, breastfeeding and previous reactions to light treatments. Bring product names rather than relying on a description such as acne cream. The clinician can then check whether treatment is appropriate and explain any preparation; do not independently stop a prescription to fit an appointment.

Is BLU-U the same as photodynamic therapy?

No. BLU-U names a blue-light device, while photodynamic therapy combines light with a photosensitizing medication. A device can therefore be part of different treatment approaches. Confirm which appointment you are booking and ask for the corresponding preparation and aftercare, particularly if you have had light-only sessions before and assume the next visit will be the same.

Will I wear eye protection?

Yes, protective eyewear is used during treatment. Tell the team if it feels uncomfortable or shifts so they can address it before continuing, and follow their directions throughout the session. Mention relevant eye conditions during your consultation as well; comfort and eye protection should be part of the planned appointment, not something you have to work out once the light is on.

Recommendations are informational. A clinical consultation is required to confirm suitability, risks and expected results.
