Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an FDA-approved skincare treatment that combines a light-sensitive solution with a specific light source to selectively destroy problem skin cells and acne-causing bacteria — while leaving healthy skin unharmed. Effective for acne, sun-damaged skin, and precancerous lesions.
What Is Photodynamic Therapy?
PDT is an innovative treatment that combines a topical light-sensitive solution (Levulan) with a specific light source. Once applied to the skin and activated by light, the solution selectively destroys targeted cells — including acne-causing bacteria and abnormal skin cells — while leaving healthy skin unharmed.
PDT is effective for acne, sun-damaged skin, improved texture, minimized pores, and a reduction in brown and red spots caused by sun damage.
The PDT Process
- Skin Preparation — Your skin is carefully cleansed and prepared
- Levulan Application — The topical solution is applied to the targeted area
- Incubation Period — The solution is left on the skin to be absorbed by targeted lesions
- Light Activation — Blue light activates the solution, which selectively destroys targeted cells and acne-causing bacteria (including sebaceous glands)
- Post-Treatment Care — Your nurse provides detailed aftercare instructions
The treatment takes approximately 60–90 minutes to complete.
What to Expect After PDT
You may experience some temporary redness, peeling, and flaking for 3–4 days following treatment, along with a gentle warmth during the light application phase.
Important: Stay indoors for 24 hours following the procedure, as the Levulan solution remains active during this time and the skin is highly light-sensitive.
For acne concerns, most clients achieve significant improvement with 3 treatments spaced 6–12 weeks apart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which skin concerns does PDT treat?
PDT is effective for active acne, sun-damaged skin, and precancerous lesions, while also improving overall skin texture and tone.
How long does a session take?
Approximately 60–90 minutes including preparation, application, and incubation time.
What's the difference between PDT and BLU-U?
BLU-U uses blue light alone for a gentler treatment suitable for regular sessions. PDT adds Levulan topical solution before the blue light for a significantly more intensive effect — resulting in deeper treatment of acne, sebaceous glands, and sun damage.
Can I go out after treatment?
No — you must stay indoors for 24 hours after PDT as the skin is highly light-sensitive during this time.
